My students need age appropriate books about yoga, DVDs, a chime instrument, and hoberman spheres for our classroom weekly yoga instruction.

My Students

"If you never did, you should..These things are fun and fun is good" In my PreK class we love to sing, dance, MOVE and have FUN ! Who would expect 4 yr olds to engage in YOGA in a public school setting. More that the 3Rs are needed to keep them going. So why not YOGA, we dare to be different !!

My students are typical 4 and 5 years of age who attend their local neighborhood school .

My class is predominately African American and immigrant students. My school is located in Bedford-Stuyvesant. It is a high need and Title I school. Also, nearly all of our students qualify for free lunch. Currently, our school does not have a gym, art or music teacher. However, these subjects are mandatory for PreK students. Nevertheless, we attempt to seamlessly incorporate the Arts, Music & Singing, Exercise and Movement into our daily schedule. Weather permitting we have access to a small enclosed playground and we take a great deal of neighborhood walks. Not nearly enough for these active little ones. As they look around the neighborhood there is only one park within walking distance, a library near by, plenty of bodegas, and a commercial shopping area. There are not any places near by to promote the "Arts", therefore their exposure MUST take place in the classroom.

My Project

Yoga has been around for ages, and it is extremely beneficial for the development of the whole child. The meeting area is the hub of the classroom, the yoga books will be used for read aloud. I will engage in yoga activities 15 minutes twice a day, everyday. At this age routines and consistency is crucial. The spheres will be used for color recognition, counting, building strength, flexibility, and self control. As we complete the ABC yoga poses,this will improve students' balance, increase their concentration and improve their vocabulary. The DVDs will boost their confidence, and will help the visual learners to see the poses. The chime will be used for transition activities and to enhance their listening skills. Additionally, we will use the singing bowl to listen carefully for pitch & sounds. It will also be used as a springboard for our meditation and mindfulness adventures. These materials will enrich our classroom environment and provide lifelong experiences.

My classroom instruction is engaging and fun.

My students need more than the 3Rs. With the lack of gym, art or music instruction, the addition of yoga will allow the students to be exposed to these missing components. Additionally, yoga will increase their vocabulary, breathing, build flexibility. Students will work together as a team for certain activities as they continue to build their social and emotional skills. Lastly, it will have a relaxing calming effect on them.
