I teach a set of wonderful 3rd-grade students who live in a low-income community, a community that is mixed with violence and poverty. Each student has a wide range of academic, social and emotional needs.
They walk in every morning, looking for a simple hug, something that isn't always given at home.
Coming to school sometimes is their only consistent "thing/person" in their lives. They know every school day, they will get breakfast, lunch, and snacks provided by the staff.
My Project
I was just informed by individuals above me, that the district currently has no balance in their budget for paper - If we want to print anything once the rest of the paper is gone, than we would need to purchase our own paper - Which is fine, but it is January !
So, yes I'm sure teachers can cut back on copying, but when the math curriculum used involves printing each activity, because there are no books, we need paper!
I thought of the idea of projecting the worksheets on the Smartboard, but the students need a visual of their own to follow ! They need the worksheet in front of them to be able to see it, read it, and understand it at their own pace! Having the worksheets projected is not going to help those who are visual learners, it's is only going to confuse them! I'm a special education teacher, and I'm sure those educators on this site, can understand how many pages are involved with one IEP ! And guess what, three copies at the end are needed ! So, yes paper kills trees, but it also helps our students!
Yes, it is a lot to ask - But this will help the district tremendously - The paper I am asking for, is going to help my building! We have 3 copy machines, and the paper will be equally given out to those 3 copy machines!
It's not just helping me as a teacher, but also the specials teachers, counselors, and mostly the students!
