This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Independent reading time is a very important part of each school day in my classroom. I want my students to have choice about what they're reading. At the same time, though, I don't want them to waste the entire reading time digging through piles of reading material looking to make their choice.
I teach a dynamic group of 5th graders who come to school each day to build a better future for themselves.
Over 90% of the students in our Title 1 school receive free or reduced lunch, and over 25% of them are English language learners. Our school strives to have a "No Excuses" attitude when it comes to preparing our students for successful futures. We utilize technology throughout instruction, and incorporate character education and college readiness in all we do. My students are destined for success, and I will do whatever it takes to prepare them for that!
My Project
Our library is growing with a greater variety of reading materials for my students- more novels, magazine subscriptions, nonfiction texts, picture books...my readers have so many options! The issue is, we are running out of space to put all of them. Right now we have piles, crates, and tubs around the room with all the reading material that doesn't fit in the library!
Having sturdy shelving units to hold and display our class magazine subscriptions will allow students to more easily select what magazine they would like to read.
Having a cart with large baskets will allow picture books to be displayed facing forward, so students will be better able to see what their options are. This additional storage will hold our growing library while allowing it to continue to grow!
