Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are amazing! They are curious about the world and LOVE learning! All of our students receive free or reduced lunch and eighty percent are English Language Learners. Despite the hardships that are out of their control (i.e. poverty, violence, drug/alcohol abuse), our students come to school like any 1st grader should---excited to learn, especially if it involves playing and exploring their surroundings! Therefore, giving them a clean working environment is of major importance and something that should be a priority.

My Project

A clean environment is always important. A clean classroom is important as well. It is well known that a clean classroom prevents the spread of germs, lowers allergic reactions and allows kids to focus more. However, over the years I have seen how our District has cut many things out of their budget. One of those things is custodial staff. Our school has over 800 students and not enough people to go around. Our current custodial staff barely has time to come around and pick up trash. Vacuuming and cleaning tables is a rare occurrence, let alone dusting.

As a Dual language teacher, I get a total of 48 children in my classroom.

That means 48 little bodies that walk and bring dust onto the carpet, 48 bodies that touch the tables on a daily basis. Although my students are pretty good at keeping our floor clear of big trash, our carpet is the one that always ends up with tiny pieces of trash and dust. Add that the fact that we are required to have breakfast in the classroom and you get the occasional spill and tiny food crumbs left behind.

The vacuum cleaner will allow me to consistently vacuum the floor. In addition, the Swiffer Dusters will also be used to dust around the room and decrease the allergens in the classroom. Swiffers are pretty fun so I envision having monitors that would take care of the dusting. In regards to the wipes, those would be used to clean their hands and wipe down their desks after they have finished their breakfast. This will ensure that they will be working on a clean table free of food crumbs or grease.
