My busy little first graders don't spend much time in their seats! Instead, we love to be on the floor, sitting with our friends, playing learning games, and participating in group activities. However, we don't have anywhere to sit!
I am the teacher of 21 amazing, awesome, funny, cool, incredible first graders who never cease to put a smile on my face!
Seriously! They're that awesome! They are smart, articulate, inquisitive, and social! We love to read, sing, dance, solve math problems, and learn about the world around us! We live in an area of moderate poverty in Western Pennsylvania. Our school is a public K-6 school that serves about 630 students.
My Project
I'm requesting one classroom rug that is large enough so that every student has a space of his or her own. We do a lot of teamwork in first grade. However, that's hard to do without using the floor. Unfortunately, by the time I was hired, there were no more classroom rugs to go around... My kids sit on the floor when we do our class meetings, calendar time, book talks, and other group activities. I had brought in a large sheet for us to sit on, but it was way too slippery on the floor and I was afraid someone would get hurt. It had to go! First graders aren't meant to stay in their chairs all day. We need to move around! But, without a warm/cozy carpet to sit on, we get a little grumpy and a lot wiggly! This carpet was designed to give each student personal space while enabling us to work together on the floor in large or small groups.
I know that this rug is really expensive and I feel bad about asking for a carpet that costs so much.
However, this rug really will help to pull our classroom together. It will define a particular area in our room that is designated for group activities such as calendar time and read-alouds. A large class rug is truly a necessity in first grade - we spend so much time up out of our seats and on the floor. Please consider donating to our project. Thank you so much!
