Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families, and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next due to overflow and bus restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.
However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.
This is the first year we are teaching at a distance. This is going to be equally challenging for teachers, parents, and students. Our students are in first grade and have not had experience with technology and need a tremendous amount of support. Thank you for your help in making this transition as smooth as possible.
My Project
We use the carpet during many whole-group lessons as well as physical exercise, games, activities, and much more. It's a vital tool in teaching young grades.
The carpet is more necessary now than ever before since most of our first graders have never been in a classroom and do not understand classroom procedures.
A carpet allows students to have some movement while keeping them in a concentrated area so they can be monitored and taught to stay within their space. A carpet offers a more home-like feeling for easier transition to school life.
The carpet has squares with lines to help students see the boundaries of their spaces.
On the carpet, we play games that help with hand-eye coordination, cooperation, collaboration, balance, and rhythm. We use it to take part in physical activities during rainy weather, mini breaks between activities, transitions, and a comfortable space to use blocks and other materials that would otherwise be too noisy.
We also sit on the carpet together every morning to review the calendar and other skills that can be difficult to do at desks.
The current carpet in our room is not only stained, but it smells musky and has been in storage for over a year during COVID. It is coming unraveled and can't be cleaned properly. If I don't want to sit on it, I can't expect my students to do so.
