Snow Fun for Pre-K-Snow Pants for Outdoors

My students need snow pants and overalls so we can play outside! It is required that we play outside one hour per day, but unfortunately most children do not have snow gear so we stand only.

My Students

I serve nine pre-k classrooms in Kalamazoo. Our children attend a full day pre-k program. Each classroom I teach has 18 students.

Our children are extremely low income, and may have many other developmental risk factors.

Our day is full of interactive play, family style meals, and outdoor recess! During our school day we go outside for at least an hour to play. Traveling to nine rooms will allow me to bring the winter gear to help 162 children enjoy their outside play.

My Project

We go outside twice a day and stay outside for approximately 30 minutes each time. Most of the 18 students DO NOT have snow pants. Without proper outside attire, they have to stay on the pavement. As you can imagine, that is no fun for a four year old. Living in West Michigan we get plenty of lake effect snow

Outside play is essential for gross motor development in preschool children and they crave the fresh air and playtime!

Having a full set of snow gear will eliminate a huge barrier and allow all children to actually enjoy the cold weather and not watch from the sidelines.
