Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Educating students in an inner-city school can be challenging yet rewarding. I teach and reward students at a low-income school where more than ninety percent (90%) of the students are on free lunch, need extra help in one or more academic subjects, and have low test scores. However, they continuously strive for proficiency daily.

By providing snow cones to celebrate their achievements, I am reinforcing the value of their effort, while also motivating them to continue striving for success.

This small treat serves as both a reward and a reminder of their progress, reinforcing a sense of accomplishment. It’s a way to show them that their dedication does not go unnoticed, and that they deserve both recognition and rest. The goal of this project is simple: to create a fun, positive experience that helps students relax and recharge, while also boosting their enthusiasm for continued learning. By offering a moment of enjoyment, I hope to cultivate a mindset that associates academic achievement with both hard work and enjoyment.

My students are incredibly special because, despite the challenges they face, being at risk and coming from an economically deprived community, they are excelling academically like never before. My students have been exposed to more rigorous content than ever, and the data shows their progress. The snow cone celebration is a small but meaningful gesture to honor their resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity, and to show them that their success matters.
