Help me give my students the chance to be "snow angels." They don't need wings or halos, they just need some snow shovels and scrapers to help our the neighbors around our school and our teachers!
My students are the reason I show up to work each and every day. Our school is unique in the sense that we have a very diverse population in terms of socioeconomic status. Despite the differences in terms of finances, I see students welcome and include each other each and every day.
It truly does take a village to raise a child, but I believe a child has the power to make their village a better place.
Regardless of economic background, my students have a richness in their hearts that needs to be shared with the world around them.
My Project
The shovels and snow scrapers will allow our students the chance to make a difference in the world around them. This one time donation will allow us to continue this program year after year. Our school knows the importance of having high academic expectations, but we also know for students to be truly awesome, they need to be good citizens as well. We want to empower students to make the world around them a better place. There is no better place than in your own community to start making a difference.
Students will have an increased sense of belonging when they become a "snow angel." We know the value of academics, but we also know that in order for students to really learn, they must have a sense of belonging.
A recent Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) shows that 30% of our students don't feel like they belong at school. I believe this can be changed by giving our students opportunities and the right tools. In this case, the right tools involve snow removal equipment. We will be selecting 15 different middle school students during each of the winter months to shovel the sidewalks and driveways of the homes near our school. They will also remove snow from their teachers' cars on snowy days.
The students will be getting physical exercise, working as a team, learning the value of hard work, and taking ownership in making our community a better place.
We feel this awesome project is a win-win-win for our students, staff, and community members!
