This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I want my classroom to be a warm, welcoming environment where the students create positive memories and relationships. That's why I'm requesting snacks and socialization items. While these items aren't primarily / explicitly academic, these items help them have a positive mindset about school, which primes their minds for being open to learning and engaging with their teachers. Help me give my students a more welcoming, supportive environment to enjoy their time at school. We need popcorn, applesauce, play dough, and granola.

The snacks are for behavioral incentives, rewards for review games, and for extra breakfast on testing days.

Last year, three of my students wrote on their surveys that they really liked the snacks because it showed I cared about them. I also sometimes have students who struggle to have enough food at home or make it to school for breakfast time, so I'd like to have some healthy back-up snacks for them.

The games are for breakfast time, reward time, and indoor-recess time. The students have a 25 minute breakfast period every morning in the classroom, and having games gives them something positive to do; to start their day in a good mood. They're also great to have on-hand when the class has earned some "free time" or when it's too rainy / hot to go outside. For the past 2 years, society has realized school isn't just about grades; it's also about building relationships. These items help our classroom support social and emotional needs.

Lastly, the masks are freely available to my students to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases and absences. About 60% of my students are masking voluntarily, and my students take about 10 a day. Absences have really hindered learning the past 2 years and I'd love to do whatever I can to keep my students healthy and here in-person.
