This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are absolutely amazing in every way. Our class is complete with 25 enthusiastic, curious, and animated first graders from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our class is an integrated co-teaching (ICT) classroom meaning that a portion of our students have special needs. Our needs range from speech and language disorders to autism but none of the labels stop any of the students from trying their hardest and always exceeding expectations. These 25 students are dedicated and excelling in the classroom is the norm!
Our class of students are a unique, clever, determined, and persistent bunch with a range of interests and needs - making each and every lesson new and exciting!
My co-teacher and I take a very hands-on approach to education which allows students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
My Project
Being hungry impacts each and every individual, regardless of their age, background, toys they like to play with or academic needs. It is my job as an educator to ensure that all of the students in my class never feel like they can't learn or be their best selves because they are hungry. At our school, students are given free breakfast and lunch every day to ensure that they are receiving the nutrition that they need in order to learn but being hungry can hit at any time. Some students are not able to provide for our daily snack, some students miss breakfast and come in hungry and others leave at the end of the day worried about when they will eat next. These snacks will cover all of these situations and will be kept for all 1st graders. The snacks chosen are all non-perishable. The bulk snack will be distributed during classroom snack to ensure that ALL students get snack EVERY day and the other snack will be used to get sent home or at other times in the day.
Whether it be first thing in the morning, during our class snack, before the bus ride home or in anticipation for a long weekend--my students will be given the opportunity to choose a snack that will fill their bellies and allow them to continue their days stress and hunger-free.
