My students need healthy snacks to get them through the school day, and ready to eat meals to take home over weekends. Knowing where your next meal is coming from should be a feeling everyone knows.
Welcome to our Fantastic First Grade! I teach 26 amazing 6-7 year old children. They are happy, sweet, and eager to learn. Our room is full of big personalities! My students are hungry for knowledge because they know one day they will change the world.
My students all live in the west side of Chicago and face very real challenges every day, yet come to school full of enthusiasm and pride.
90% of our school population come from poverty, but what we lack in money, we make up for in effort, love, and hope. Living where they do shouldn't mean a lesser education, and I am here to make sure they reach for the stars.
I have a large, happy, inclusive classroom -- which means I am lucky enough to teach excited students with a variety of learning styles and backgrounds -- special education and general education combined. Every day is an opportunity.
I want them to be as happy learning as I am to be teaching.
My Project
My students come to school hungry to learn, but unfortunately they come with hungry bellies as well. They often cannot make it to lunch without feeling hunger pangs, and their rumbling bellies are a constant reminder that they cannot learn when they are famished.
There are days when my babies are not sure when they will eat next -- and I cannot expect them to focus on learning when they are worried about their next meal.
These snacks would give them fuel to get through our very busy days and give them one less thing to worry about. The microwavable meals and snacks will go home with them on weekends, ensuring they have something healthy to get them through.
My babies work hard and so do their families. Sometimes they just don't have enough to make ends meet. This project would give them a helping hand where it is undoubtedly needed most.
