it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Miss, I'm hungry. Do you have anything to eat?" I happened to have an apple on my desk leftover from my lunch (Cliche? Yes.) and gave it to the student.
Without fail, I get asked at least twice a day if I have any snacks or water to share with my students.
While the majority of my students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program, the portions are minuscule. Others don't have time to eat because they end up using their lunch period to make up a test or meet with a teacher about a class issue. By the time students get to my class, they are hungry.
Hungry students make it difficult for me to teach. They are irritable and tired. Imagine if you had to write an essay or read Shakespeare, and the last time you ate something was 12 hours ago at dinner?
My Project
For this project, I am requesting healthy(ish) snacks for my students such as granola bars, cheese crackers, and reduced-calorie Pop-Tarts. So many students end up going hungry throughout the school day because of meetings or work during lunch or because of the unfortunate stigma of eating cafeteria food. By the end of the day, students are not only starving but lethargic and unable to focus on their classwork. With your donation, students can get a quick snack and get back to focusing on the lesson.
I am also requesting waffle mix and two small waffle irons and related supplies to teach students some cooking basics.
When asked, many students say they have no idea how to cook even the simplest meals. These supplies will not only make a special breakfast for students but will empower them by learning some basic food preparation skills.
