Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a high school math teacher in South Central Los Angeles. My school is a Title I school that is considered PHBAO (Predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian, or other Non-Anglo). My students all qualify for free breakfast and lunch and comes from primarily low-income families. Many of the students do not have access the tools and technology needed for success in mathematics. With this lack of access, many students have to share calculators, iPads, laptops, etc. which slows down their learning drastically.
In the face of adversity, my students remain enthusiastic about learning.
All students remain diligent, patient, and persistent as we all adapt to learning while adjusting to the pandemic. Although we are back in the classroom, many students struggle with the tremendous impact of the pandemic. Many families are still struggling. This is very motivating for me as a teacher to provide as much support as I can to my students and their families.
My Project
School provided meals are not enough to feed students throughout the day and many students do not have money to purchase snacks at the students store. Therefore, students often sit through class with a growling stomach. The snacks from this projects will help students fight off hunger and remain focused on their learning. I hope to provide snacks for the students who get hungry and cannot afford to make purchases at the student store. In addition, the snacks can be used as incentives for special accomplishments or special acts of kindness.
