Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Each day, my students face challenges before they enter the school building, ranging from extreme poverty, single-parent households where the parent works multiple jobs, students with incarcerated parents, and many students who live in shelters.
Several of my students come to my office during the day complaining of hunger.
My Project
I am a Social Worker in a South Bronx middle school seeking funding for snacks for my hungry students. During the school day I have students coming to my office complaining of hunger, which effects their ability to concentrate on academics and causing their emotions to go array.
Many of my students don't eat lunch at school and this leaves them especially hunger in the afternoon.
Having a supply of snacks in my office will help keep my students on task and free from hunger.
Sometimes a simple snack is all a student needs when they are overwhelmed, and they don't even realize it is because they haven't eaten.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
