Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My ninth grade Algebra students all have such unique personalities and all come from very diverse backgrounds. Although we are a low-income, high poverty urban school, my students come ready to learn everyday. In my classroom, we have fun doing engaging projects and working with one another. Having students of various backgrounds and who have various interests makes for a very lively classroom environment. As a teacher, my goal for these students is to make their time in my classroom as positive as it can be.

I love coming to school everyday because I love to see my students excited to learn and ready for a new challenge.

I hope to be able to incorporate math manipulatives, hands-on activities and as much technology as I can in my classroom to ensure the students are enjoying the learning that is happened.

My Project

As the last day of school gets closer, it can be very difficult to keep students engaged when their minds are thinking about summer instead of school. A key factor to classroom success is focus. At my school, we have block scheduling so classes are about 90 minutes long. That is a very long time for students to stay engaged and participating especially if they are hungry.

My hardest class of the day is the one right before lunch because the students are hungry and focusing on lunch instead of the classroom material.

I have noticed that when I bring in snacks from home the complaints about their stomachs go away and they are more energized and ready to learn. Most of my students take advantage of the free lunch at school because they may not have money at home to bring in their own lunches. I want to provide my students with some healthier options throughout the day to keep them focused on learning instead of wondering when their next meal will be.

In the beginning of the year I was buying snacks for my students but it is not cheap and my stash tends to run low so I was not able to cater to all of my students when I wanted to. My first Donors Choose project for snacks was a huge success and I would love to be able to supply my students with snacks again.

This supply will really make a great, positive impact on our classroom environment and it will impact those students who may not eat at home and are now able to take a snack home with them to tide them over.
