Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 16 bilingual kindergarten students that are remote learning with a range of abilities, needs, and concerns this school year. My students are in a low income/high poverty school in which 84.4% of the students receive free or reduced-price meals.
Our students have not been to school since spring break let out and they have been remote learning from the safety of their home due to the COVID-19 virus.
They have been provided with the opportunity of checking out an iPad to work on activities from home to continue the progress of learning. Also, students who have opted out have been able to pick up packets. Remote learning has been a struggle for many.
However, the main thing that concerns me is if they have basic needs met as many parents may be out of work due to businesses that closed or because they have had to stay home to help their children with their school work. Other parents are working and kids stay home for long hours between meals.
New financial burdens arose from this virus.
My Project
I would like to provide a little bit of help by giving my students a variety of snacks. I will need two-gallon Ziploc bags to place the following snacks in-Goldfish, Ritz crackers, Fruit Snacks, Freeze Pops, Knotts, Cheez-Its, Nilla wafers, mixed fruit cups, String Cheese, soups, and cookies.
Upon receiving the donated snacks, I will proceed to make bags for my students to deliver to their homes with the necessary precautions (mask & gloves).
I would like to do this before the school year officially ends.
I know this will put a big smile on their sweet faces. They have been working so hard to continue learning. This would be a well-deserved treat.
