This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am always in admiration of the perseverance and grit I see in my students and their families. I am so lucky to arrive each day at a job I love, with smiling kids whose parents support and value education in the ways that they can.
My students deserve to have access to the same materials and opportunities that students in more affluent areas receive.
Our school is a Title I school, and the majority of my students participate in the free or reduced-price lunch program. Many of our students are second language learners and struggle academically. Many of our students reside in homeless shelters and foster homes. Most of them also do not have books, technology, or art supplies at home.
My students and their families face many obstacles in their daily lives and I strive to make sure my students have access to the same materials and opportunities kids in more affluent areas receive.
My goal each year is to create an eagerness, excitement, and high engagement around learning and help each of them build a true love of learning.
My Project
Please help me build up a stockpile of non-perishable snacks that I can give out to students without a snack at our morning snack recess time. My first graders, due to the pandemic, haven't really "done school" before now for any length of time and they haven't built up the stamina to be in a classroom even if they were coming with the appropriate snacks to keep them fueled up and ready to learn.
Many of my little "firsties" come to school without a snack and they start asking when lunch is at about 10:15!
With a stockpile of snacks in the classroom, we can all help make sure that hunger is not getting in the way of my students feeling ready to do all the important learning they need to do!
I will also send home snacks with some of my kiddos on Fridays so that they have some extra food to eat on the weekends.
