Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with some of the most resilient, creative, funny and smart young people I've known. They inspire me every day.
My urban, English learning, mostly low income students face many challenges but surprise me every day with their commitment to improving themselves and their community.
We live in an expensive community who is facing displacement by gentrification and rising rents. 80% of our student body qualifies for free or reduced rate lunch and almost a third of them have special needs. This doesn't stop them from trying their hardest.
My Project
I would like to provide snacks for my students.
Most of them are hungry and the snacks you send help them make it to the end of the day.
At the end of the day we have an advisory period where our students prepare for SATs, do homework, learn about social justice or do community activities.
I have a system, they need to write something they like about themselves, something they are thankful for or the name of someone who supports them. We do this on a green paper leaf and we post it on our positivity tree. Once they write, they can get a snack.
