Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students live in one of the poorest congressional districts also known as the “hungriest zip code” in the country. However, in 2020, our school was ranked the top 6-12 school in all five boroughs of New York for the third year in a row! There are vast reasons for my students' success such as data-driven Instruction, individually tracking the progress of each student, and the development of Interventions to meet the needs of every student.

This is a difficult time in our country for many people.

The recent confluence of events has brought to the forefront, more than ever before, the inequities that we face in our society. The response to COVID-19 has impacted all of us in unprecedented ways. Among the drastic changes that have taken place, school closures have brought many uncertainties and concerns for our community. This pandemic did not affect all Americans equally. The coronavirus has spread through urban areas like the Bronx faster than rural areas and has disproportionately affected African-American and Hispanic communities.

Hunger has increased most for black and brown families.

I know from experience that a hungry child is not a happy child.

Hunger can lead to an inability to focus as well as behavioral outbursts. My students will benefit from snacks as their basic needs will be met. By this I mean they will be able to focus on their academics and not have to worry about food.

The time to act is now to strengthen our communities, and we have a unique opportunity to make these changes.

We cannot let this time pass without doing everything that is possible to ensure that we are fighting to support our students and giving them an extra hand when we can.
