My students are a fun group of creative and active fifth graders. We live in a rural, isolated village in northwest Alaska, where many students practice subsistence hunting and fishing to support their families. Most of my students are Native Alaskan and are taught traditional native values.
My students love playing sports, hunting caribou, riding snow machines and four-wheelers, going ice fishing, and sledding.
My students are a diverse group, with strong ties to their families, their culture, and the land. In the classroom, they are an energetic group that enjoys working in groups, doing hands-on activities, and playing goofy games.
My Project
We begin school at 8am, and by 10:00, my students are ready for a snack. They are served lunch at noon, but most of the kids can't wait that long to eat. I ask my wonderful student families to donate food, and they do, but we still have days when we run out of food. Those days, when the kids don't get their snack, many of them have a very hard time being productive. Their empty tummies just won't let them work.
This food will ensure that my students will never again have to go without their much-needed mid-morning snack.
This snack gives them the energy to write, read, and explore until lunch. These snacks will be shared by both fifth grade classes. Help my kids be the best learners they can be with the food they need!
