Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school community is located in the far East Side of the City. This area was once highly industrial and many people immigrated to this area for a better life for their families. Most of my students are of Mexican descent. They are first-generation Americans.
Our school demographics are as follows: 98% are low-income, 26% are English Language Learners, and 14% have learning disabilities.
We have an enrollment of about 800 students. We have a high population of homeless/displaced students. Some come from extremely low-income households. As an 8th-grade math and science teacher, my hope is to enrich their lives with materials and resources that offer them an equal opportunity education as other communities in our city.
My Project
My students have a long day. Often they come in without eating breakfast. I want to be able to provide them with breakfast bars, water bottles, healthy chips and nuts that they can have throughout the day to alleviate some of their hunger pains until lunchtime.
Lunchtime is fairly late in the day and some students need a little snack to keep them going through the day.
Each class period is 90 minutes long. Most of our students need a pick me up in between to continue with math. Many of them come dehydrated and having bottled water for them could help and motivate them to work to their potential.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
