My Students

My students come from a high-poverty area. They face many challenges at home and in school. Many of them are lacking in basic school supplies. Most are low academically, but they come to school every day, ready and eager to learn.

I want my students to have the best third-grade experience possible.

Our school budget is very small, and I buy a lot of materials myself. I need some help to give my students what they need to be more successful in the classroom. I cannot control what my students experience outside of school, but, while they are in my classroom, I strive to provide them with everything I can to make them feel cared for and successful.

My Project

I have chosen books to help support 3 areas in our learning. First, is oceans and space to support our language arts units. Second, is weather and life cycles to support our science. Lastly, is representation. I want my students to have books where they can see characters that look like them, and where characters face the daily routines and struggles that they face. I have also chosen some books about key African American historical figures, such as Harriet Tubman and Mae Jemison.

It's hard to learn with an empty belly, so I've also included a variety of snacks in this project to help keep my students full and focused throughout the day.

Lastly, I've asked for headphones, something that we can never seem to get enough of.
