Snacks Around Town: Keeping Bellies Full During School Closure!

My Students

My students are a diverse, dynamic, creative, insightful, empathetic, and amazing group of 3rd graders who make the world a better place every day. I am struck over and over again by the depth of their ability and desire to engage deeply with meaningful topics, to think critically, and to practice the important skills of respectful, honest discourse.

These remarkable kids are always on the lookout for opportunities to have impact upon their community for the greater good.

Given the fact that our year has been somewhat curtailed, it's my hope that you will help them do that by contributing to our "Snacks Around Town" initiative. Read on to find out more!

My Project

Hi! My name is Kate Perkins and I teach 3rd grade at CFES in Amherst, MA. As a part of our biography unit each year, 3rd grade readers and writers study people who have brought important, nonviolent change to our world. We call these people "Great Changers" and some examples include Ruby Bridges, Greta Thunberg, Dr. King, Malala Yousafzai, Wangari Mathais, Yiyiao Kusama, and many, many more! Each student chooses a Great Changer to research and, after becoming experts on their Great Changers, students write teaching poems and created cut paper collages of their important people. Last year, we turned this work into greeting cards, which we sold to raise money to install 3 Little Free Libraries at bus stops in our town.

Each year, 3rd graders learn that anyone can be a Great Changer and can make our world a better place for all people.

To that end, we would like to use the libraries to make sure kids in our community have snacks while school is not in session. Your donation will enable us to purchase healthy, prepackaged snacks for kids who may not otherwise have them. Thanks for considering our project!
