This project is inspired by two former students. The first student, a soccer player who was in one of my morning classes, frequently asked me if I had any granola bars or snacks because he was starting to feel the effects of skipping breakfast. Like many teachers in my building, I have a stash of snacks for situations like this. The second student who inspired this project is a hard worker who is in my last class of the day. As class was starting, he said, "You know what I could really go for right now? A Slim Jim or some beef jerky." Thanks to the generosity of the DonorsChoose community, last year I was able to provide students with healthy snacks and some sweet treats.
The students need the snacks for various reasons.
Some students, like the soccer player mentioned above, skip breakfast or don't get enough to eat at home. Others, like the senior craving beef jerky, just need some kindness in the form of a snack or treat. In the past, I have been able to use the snacks as an opportunity to get to know quiet students or to lift up a student who is having a bad day.
Your donation will help students who don't get enough to eat at home, unfocused students who need to pay attention in class, and students who are having a bad day and are in need of a little kindness.
