My Students
Our students at P.S./I.S. 48 learn in a New York City pre-kindergarten through 8th-grade school. They come from very diverse backgrounds. Over a third of them come from low-income households, and some of them are a part of military families. A significant part of our student body are English Language Learners (ELLs); that is, they are new Americans. The students I teach all have disabilities, as they are a part of a Special Education program.
I've always thought that the elementary and middle school years are a vital time period for children, as this is often when some of them start making the wrong choices.
I became a teacher, in part, to set a good example for children who need role models in their lives. My hope is that I'll have a lasting impact on them.
My Project
With the help of generous donors, I've been able to provide many of my students with healthy snacks and jackets. I'm now requesting numerous snacks and jackets so that I can help others in my school community who are in need. There's no better feeling than hearing that some of our students are keeping warm with a new jacket, despite living in a temporary shelter; this actually happened just recently. I'd like to distribute these jackets to any and all of our students who need a jacket to keep warm during our harsh NYC winters. Additionally, I'd like to replenish my own healthy snack supply for my students and provide snacks to other professionals in my school who encounter children in need (e.g. guidance counselor, assistant principal, etc.) This way, the neediest of our student population can be fed when need be.
