Special education can be challenging but extremely rewarding. Especially if you teach in the South Bronx. My students come from a predominately low-income area and often come from single-family households. 99% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches based on their socio-economic backgrounds, and 25% of those students have special needs. My students face a multitude of problems in our school. Lack of proper funding for books and other essential needs, growing up in a high crime and high poverty neighborhood, and a general culture that doesn't put an emphasis on a strong education.
My students are highly energized and visual learners.
They love working on computers and using technology. In my classroom, I push my students to become job and college ready. Throughout the year we explore how to write resumes, balance checkbooks, plan a dinner party, use Microsoft Office, use Google Drive, and design a house/room/zoo. This way my students are ready for the real world at a young age.
My Project
It is extremely important for my self contained students to feel their best so they can focus on their schoolwork. They must put their best foot forward or be at risk of falling behind. With proper snacks, my students can focus during class and increase their chances of doing well. My students consistently complain about being hungry and drained as they day goes on.
Please help me provide nutritious snacks for my students so they can achieve greatness in my classroom.
Students sit through classes for four periods straight without a snack or anything to drink. Many of my students are unable to afford healthy snacks so they are usually hungry throughout the day. I want to be able to distribute healthy snacks and water during the breaks, to keep my students' energy up and discourage them from reaching for junk food. I also want to provide some "fun" food for incentives.
