My Project

As a school social worker, I’ve witnessed firsthand how something as simple as a snack, a set of LEGO bricks, and some bins to organize them in can offer a meaningful sense of comfort and stability to students who are often carrying more than their fair share of life’s burdens. For many of my high school students from low-income families, school can be both a refuge and a source of stress.

These small resources become tools for emotional regulation, creating brief moments where students feel seen, supported, and safe.

Snacks may seem minor, but they fulfill a basic need that is often unmet at home. Hunger can seriously impact focus, mood, and overall well-being. Having access to snacks at school means students can better manage their energy and emotions throughout the day.

LEGOs, surprisingly, have become a powerful therapeutic tool. Students use them not only to build imaginative creations but also to process feelings of anxiety, frustration, or sadness. The hands-on activity offers a meditative escape and encourages creative expression in a non-verbal way. For some, it's the only time they feel relaxed or proud of something they’ve made. These moments matter. Organizational bins offer the chance to store and organize the LEGO bricks, focusing on the activity and escaping one's thoughts for a few moments. When students feel emotionally safe, they’re more open to learning, connecting with peers, and setting goals. These simple resources remind our students that they are cared for and that even in the face of challenges, there is space for joy, creativity, and hope within our school walls.
