Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families, and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next due to overflow and bus restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.
However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.
This is the first year we are teaching at a distance. This is going to be equally challenging for teachers, parents, and students. Our students are in first grade and have not had experience with technology and need a tremendous amount of support. Thank you for your help in making this transition as smooth as possible.
My Project
In order to abide by CDC regulations, our students have to eat lunch at 11:00 am. Dismissal isn't until 2:45 pm and most students don't get anything to eat at home until dinnertime.
That means the first graders have to go 4 to 8 hours without anything to eat; not counting those who have to wait until breakfast at school the next day.
In a previous project, our class was granted a project with plain crackers and dried cranberries. The students are eager to have one every day. If these children are excited over plain crackers and dried fruit, I am confident that they are truly hungry. Now that I know that there is real hunger, I am hoping to get this project funded before the previous snacks run out. I also chose a wider variety of choices as well as slightly larger portion sizes.
These snacks have helped students focus in the afternoons when they are typically low on energy. Students today need all the help, support, and advantages they can get. Thank you for making this possible!
