This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am working to make granola bars, pop tarts and other grab and go food items available as an incentive for students I work with. One of my teaching roles is working with a select group of low-income high school students who are credit deficient and need to quickly make up classes to be on track to graduate high school on time. These students have enrolled in a program where they take online classes on campus before the school day starts, and stay an hour after the school day ends to continue working, making their school day 9.5 hours long.
These students are working hard, but some find it difficult to maintain the stamina needed and taper off toward the end of the semester and would benefit from healthy snacks like Nature's Valley granola bars, Gardetto's Snack Mix and Kind Bars.
Some students stop showing up, or stop doing work consistently because the program is so intense. I am aiming to make it a place they want to be even when they are hitting a wall mentally, and plan to do this by incentivizing their attendance. As a support resource I attend these classes with the students, pull students aside one on one to discuss their progress and help motivate them to keep working hard, and provide a snack like a granola bar, some Pop Tarts in the morning, or candy for a quick sugar rush. The kids at our school are highly motivated by food, usually because school is the only place they can count on for food. The snacks will keep them attending these sessions and will also fuel their brains for the extra work they are doing as they are mentally and physically engaged in school work for upwards of 9.5 hours a day.
