Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is nice to know that there are organizations willing to take a chance on a community, like the "Parkchester" community. Our school is located in the heart of the Bronx. We are a Title 1 school with little resources for our classrooms. Over 90% of our children eat free school lunch, and appreciate the hot meal.
My classroom is a little red trailer, located in our school's parking lot. We have a bathroom, heat, a water cooler and a portable desktop stove. Our classroom is our second home. My request is for a warm, generous, hungry individual, who cares about food, to donate a small refrigerator for our classroom. Our class now uses our outside stairs and gated window ledge to hold our daily snacks, perishable foods for Science experiments and classroom cooking activities. However, Spring is upon us and the weather will be warm soon. Our window ledge will be warmed by the heat of the burning sun, and will spoil our milk.
My First graders are very important to me and I want to give them as many educational hands-on experiences as possible. This week we tried to make butter out of heavy cream and the cream spoiled outside, so we had Irish Soda Bread without butter. Two weeks ago for Dr. Seuss' birthday, we were going to make green eggs and ham and our ham and eggs were outside on the steps and the area squirrels rummaged through our bags. These are very impressionable years for them and their brains absorb experiments like sponges. We really would appreciate a classroom refrigerator to enhance our cooking learning experiences.
