it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Many of my students come to school hungry, and hunger makes learning much harder. When students are distracted by growling stomachs, their ability to focus, participate, and produce quality work declines sharply. Having access to snacks in the classroom helps meet a basic need that many of them aren’t able to fulfill at home. A simple granola bar, crackers, or fruit snack can make a major difference in a child’s ability to stay engaged and succeed during the school day.
Beyond the physical need, snacks help build a classroom environment that feels safe and supportive.
Students know that when they are here, their needs will be met — not just academically, but emotionally and physically. That sense of security allows them to settle in and focus on learning instead of survival. It builds trust. When I offer a snack, I’m not just giving them food — I’m showing them that they are seen, cared for, and supported.
Snacks also serve as an effective and immediate form of positive reinforcement. A small reward for good behavior, hard work, or kindness can be incredibly motivating. It builds habits of responsibility and effort while making students feel valued. For many, especially those who don’t get consistent encouragement outside of school, this makes a huge impact.
In short, snacks are not just treats. They are tools that help my students feel safe, stay focused, and succeed.
