My students need non-fiction books from the Smithsonian collection: Fossils: Smithsonian Handbook, Smithsonian Handbooks Horses, Gemstones, & Insects, Stars and Planets.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you ever wonder about clouds and how they are formed? How about what is inside a seed that makes a plant or tree grow? If your answer is yes, then you must be an inquisitive being just like most of my students in my classroom.
My students are smart, driven, and very verbal.
They are 100% Hispanic. Most of them do not have a computer or other technology at home. They are exposed to violence, socioeconomic limitations, and like lack of food. Our school provides a safe environment away from gangs and other socioeconomic limitations. In my classroom, they get to dream and the sky is the limit. They've planned future traveling plans, designed their dream homes, and have become celebrated community heroes. The classroom is a safe haven where dreaming high is encouraged. Nothing is impossible when they dream, write, and share their future plans. They would thrive as enthusiastic learners if they are provided with the memories that will last a lifetime. They will experience and recollect their memories in a whole new way.
My Project
If you look at the statistics of reading proficiency in the USA you will see that most of our students are below grade level in reading comprehension. This year I have a class full of English Learners and reading non-fiction books is challenging. This is why it is so important that students have access to a variety of texts that can meet their individual needs. This project will allow me to get several Smithsonian reading books like the Non-Fiction Fossils: Smithsonian Handbook, Smithsonian Handbooks Horses, Gemstones, & Insects, Stars and Planets. These books will help my students advance in their reading skills. I will be able to meet with students in a small group setting and choose books based on their reading level. This will allow them to become successful readers at their own pace. The books that I have chosen also correlate to our science curriculum which will allow students to gain a deeper understanding of these areas through reading.
Funding this project will provide my students with so much more than the physical books they will receive.
This will show my students that there are people in the world that support them and care about their education. This will validate my statement for my students, that any child can go to college, regardless of their financial status because there are generous people who are willing to share their money in order to support the future of a child.
