My Students

John Dewey said, "If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." Technology is our future and has the ability to enhance every child's learning. By incorporating digital storytelling in my classroom, digital cameras will allow students to take ownership of their work.

I have 22 fourth grade students.

My class is active, energetic, diverse, and fun. We love learning, and we work extremely hard each and every day. We live in a rural community in Arkansas. Most have never traveled out of state, and some have never been out of our small town. I have a couple of special education children and about half of my class receives free or reduced lunches. My students love to play games online, type their papers in Computer Lab, and if they're lucky, play with their parents' iPhones or iPads at home. I try to incorporate as much technology as I can every day because my students are more engaged and attentive when the lesson I teach or the game they play reminds them of their Nintendo DS system or their xBox 360.

My Project

My vision for my nine and ten year old students is for them to create digital stories. I have struggling writers in my room. To inspire their creativity, I would like to turn their narratives into a movie. In short, after creating a story, students will create a story board. They will then record themselves reading their own writing. Using Photostory 3 from Microsoft, students will be able to add music and photographs to match their story. My hope is to not only share these stories with their peers, but the entire school, district, and ultimately the web. Students will be excited to write and complete their project. It allows them to be creative and work with different types of media. In order to take this project to the next level, I would like for my kids to be able to take their own photographs that match their story. For example, if we are writing explanatory pieces, students can take pictures of themselves performing each step. The possibilities are truly endless!

Using digital cameras to create digital stories will not only encourage my struggling writers this year, but for years to come.

By donating money, you will be making a tremendous impact on literally hundreds of students. I am crossing my fingers that this will have a ripple effect in my school and digital storytelling will become an integral part of our school day. It not only allows students to learn content, but promotes collaborative learning, creativity, and communication.
