Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My class is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to get behind the lens of their cameras and capture memorable images of their vibrant neighborhood. My 5th graders are all from impoverished homes. For many students, the only camera - if it even exists in their home - is found on their parents' cell phones. To me, this is a travesty, because I view - and my students are coming to accept - the camera as a crucial part of experiencing life.

I grew up with a camera in my hand. When I became a teacher last year, one of my main goals was to impart my love of photography to my students. It's a passion of mine, and because of this, the students have taken a keen interest in photography. But work can't be done without cameras. I'm happy to let them use my own camera, but that can only happen in school. In order for my eager class to really spread their wings, they have to be able to borrow a camera to take home. And in order to sustain motivation, there have to be enough cameras to go around.

I was blessed when a project I had on Donors Choose was funded last year, and my students received 7 cameras through the generosity of folks like yourself. This time, I am asking for three more cameras, and the appropriate accessories, with the goal of expanding the photography project so that more students can experience the use of a camera at the same time. I anxiously await the day when I can open the box of new cameras with my excited students.

Last year, my first as a teacher, my fifth graders knocked the socks off everyone who saw their display of over 150 photographs. That never could have happened without donors' support. Knowing that the onus is on them to produce similarly spectacular shots, this year's class is bursting at the seams to have the opportunity to capture photos. Won't you please help make their vision a reality? You can really impact us in such a wonderful way by helping us purchase these extra cameras.
