Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I would love to have my students interact with other students in our school especially the students in our Autistic program. I want my students to interact with these students in science and with gardening. Gardening a a very special tool to use and to have students interact with nature.

My school is a public school within a very large school district in which resources are very limited.

My school is in a low income area and our school's free and reduce lunch is over 90%. I must purchase most of my supplies at the Dollar Store in order to complete labs.

My Project

My students will interact with our Autistic students as they will grow plants together by using the Earth boxes. I am a master gardener and have use these boxes in the past and are very easy for students to use. The maintenance and up keep of these boxes are very easy and my students will be able to grow vegetables which they will be able to eat and donate to a local shelter. My goal is for my students to interact with a group of students in our building that is usually cut off from the main stream of students. My goal is no child left inside. My students will be able to see and learn from these very special students and be able to share in an activity that would connect them together by actually growing plants from seeds. They will also be able to share them with other less fortunate than us as an added healthy bonus to a any meal. Vegetables are absent in most teenager lives some may be introduced to new foods for the first time.

Students involved in hands on projects are a very valuable tool in science.

Growing plants and actually see something grow that they have planted makes a very important impression on students. They will never forget what they grew and how they grew it. The end result of eating especially something they grew will be embedded into their high school experience forever. These Earth Boxes are a very important tool to be added to a science class and the Autistic program at our school.
