My Students
Our class is comprised of 8 amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.
Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.
Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.
My Project
In our self-contained classroom for students with autism, we thrive on visual supports. We use visuals to supplement verbal language so that our students are better able to understand language, communicate their wants and needs, and follow directions more clearly.
Our classroom is requesting a yearlong subscription to Smarty Symbols which is an online program with access to over 21,000 special education images.
These symbols will be a great asset to our room. These images will assist in the creation of visual supports for use across the day as well as for use in my students' homes. Smarty Symbols will help to make labels for classroom materials, task analyses for steps of routines, and visual directions for art activities.
