Smartpens for Smart Kids: Engaging ELL's in the Classroom

My students need two Livescribe Echo Smartpens and notebook packs to help them access academic curriculum in their new language.

My Students

Imagine sitting in a classroom, day after day, and only understanding about half of what your teacher is saying. You try to write down notes, only to get behind and miss a word or two, changing the context of the entire sentence. This is part of what it is like to be an English language learner.

My school is a high-poverty, urban k-5 elementary school where 50% of the population are English Language Learners.

There are more than 20 different languages represented among our students! I work with students in kindergarten through fifth grade, helping them to access the core curriculum of their grade.

My Project

Livescribe Smartpens are an amazing resource for English language learners (ELL's). The pens record audio and allow playback via a special notebook. Students can record what teachers are saying, and play it back (at a slower speed if needed) to ensure they understood completely. Students will also benefit from having the ability to hear the information several times. Teachers/students are also able to record online podcasts with the pens that teachers can access in order to create lessons and post notes that students can access at later times. Livescribe Smartpens also make pronunciation easy for a student with the audio to text conversion. A student can tap on a word and hear exactly what it sounds like when said aloud. As you can see, having a Livescribe gives students a comprehensive study aid that will tremendously enhance an ESL student's learning potential.

A tool like the Livescribe Smartpen provides such benefit in the educational setting, especially for a student learning English.

An English Language Learner must work harder in school just to overcome the language barrier. While learning a second language is never an easy task, this smartpen can make the job a little easier.
