Smarter, Together: Young Engineers Saving Turtles

My students need Saving Salila's Turtle storybooks and Water, Water Everywhere materials to work together as environmental engineers to design water filters.

My Students

On the very first day of school, a third grader ran up to me in the cafeteria and asked, "When does the engineering program start?" I can't wait to tap into her excitement with a brand new environmental engineering unit this year!

My students attend a public school for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in an urban school district.

Most of these students qualify for free or reduced priced lunch and many are English Language Learners. These students come from every neighborhood in the city and some neighboring suburbs. Many of these students have difficulty communicating with their families because they do not share a common language, whether American Sign Language (ASL) or spoken English. In spite of all these challenges, these young scientists love school. It is a place where they can communicate with their peers and teachers and they love their classmates like family. They are stronger than I could have ever imagined and make their teachers proud every day.

My Project

How can we design a water filter that purifies river water to make a pollution-free habitat for a turtle? Working as environmental engineers, my third graders will apply what they have learned in science class to solve the real-world problem of water pollution. The Engineering is Elementary Water, Water, Everywhere: Designing Water Filters unit includes student storybooks, a teacher's guide, and activities and materials for investigating water filtration. Students will work collaboratively in engineering teams to investigate the properties of filter materials. They will apply what they have learned about water in the science classroom to think like environmental engineers as they plan, construct, test and improve their own water filters.

Engineering is one of the best ways to build classroom equity.

Since engineering problems do not have one "right" answer, students are empowered to take chances. They build grit and begin to feel more comfortable with both failure and success. I love to engage my students as engineers because it helps them apply what they have been learning in the science classroom to solve real world problems. Collaborating as environmental engineers will truly make my students Smarter, Together.
