This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every morning my four, five, and six year old kindergarten students gather on the rug excited and ready to learn. Still, some of these children are very behind and lack basic skills such as knowledge of letters and numbers. Children remember and learn best when they have fun!
My students are from a disadvantaged area in New York City.
Like young children everywhere they are excited to explore the world through play. The new standards for kindergarten, however, also require them to read, write, add, and subtract by the end of the school year in June. Our school is warm and inviting, but like all NYC public schools we are suffering from severe budget cuts. This prevents us from acquiring materials that we can use to help our struggling learners; especially in the early grades.
My Project
This year we were lucky enough to get a smart board or interactive white board for our classroom. Unfortunately, we did not receive any software to use with the board. The software I am requesting includes activities and games that can be used to teach and practice the alphabet; phonics; numbers; addition; subtraction; word families; sight words; and much more. This can be used for whole class instruction; small group work; and independently. My struggling students will especially benefit from this software due to the visual and hands on nature of the activities.
Donating to this project will allow me to add a fun element into the academic materials we need to cover.
It will also engage students that tend to have a hard time focusing or paying attention. This software will benefit my students for many years to come.
