Smart, Strong, and Savvy: Empowering Real American Girls
The cost of twenty copies of each of six titles in the American Girls series, such as "Addy Studies Freedom," Felicity Take a Dare" and "Kirsten and the Chippewa" is $1398, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are the school librarian and reading specialist at Public School 7, located in the East New York section of Brooklyn. We are teachers with a vision that we hope you can help us to achieve. Our school is very unique. We have children who are language-deficient but highly motivated. Our attendance record is 90 percent or better on a regular basis.
Unfortunately, many of our kids come from low-income families. Very few of them have home libraries. The only access they have to books is through school. Nevertheless, these parents are very interested in achieving educational success for their children and have shown a very strong parental involvement at our school.
In addition, many students come from single-parent homes, forcing parents to work long hours to make ends meet. We feel that offering our group of fourth-grade girls, who have been selected for academic intervention, the opportunity to meet and discuss the American Girls Series will give them an arena free from pressure and allow them to read simply for pleasure. Our goal is to help empower the girls, and raise their self-esteem to become independent women in our future society.
We would like to purchase twenty copies of the American Girls Short Stories Series. Each book has been carefully chosen because its focus runs parallel to the fourth-grade social studies curriculum. We plan to meet with this group after school to hold book discussions and readings. We will be providing extended activities to enhance the understanding of the stories, and to provide the girls with unique opportunities to help expand language development and prior knowledge.
We will be using donated china to have tea parties during the meetings, to help teach proper etiquette and manners. We would also like to make some recipes found in the series to teach the girls math and measurement, including churning butter to show how butter was made before machinery. Also, we plan to make crafts to foster a sense of community and self-worth within the girls.
With your help, we feel we can empower young girls. These same young women will one day pass on their knowledge and love of literature to a younger set. Together, we can make a difference in the community and the lives of some very special young ladies.
