My Students

My students are 22 first-graders from a large, urban community that welcomes families from all over the globe. We are a Title I school in a low-income community. Free breakfast and free lunch are available to every child in our building everyday. Since March students are now being served remotely. My students and I have taken on distance learning with determinations, consistency, and perseverance.

My students are creative, clever, and very enthusiastic about virtual learning.

But most of my students are lacking even the most basic materials to be able to successfully learn at home. While we continue living in such unpredictable times. I never imagined that when I packed up my students for two weeks of distance learning in March we wouldn’t finish the school year together. This fall we took on a new school year in a whole new type of way, virtually! My new class of 22 first-graders so much joy and excitement to our virtual learning environment.

My Project

There’s a 100% chance you are using your phone, tablet or computer to read this message. The device you’re reading this on might even be one of multiple pieces of tech you use on a daily basis. Well, 75% of the students in my classroom come from homes where they have limited to no access to technology and as a result are at a disadvantage. Our district has donated hundreds of hotspot and thousands of piece of devices to students and families to maintain in their learning while we remain virtual this school year. Technology is the new normal for my students.

The materials in my project will tremendously enhance my students' virtual learning experience in many ways, most importantly ensuring that all my students have a clear picture of my lessons on their end.

I'm teaching first grade virtually and my students need to be able to clearly see my mouth during reading and phonics lessons. The tripod will allow me to stream not only close-up videos, but also from several feet away - allowing me to incorporate the SMART Board, and other in-class learning aides -such as the math manipulative included in this project- to enhance their learning experiences. Communication is everything with distance learning! Especially when you’re teaching letter sounds!

By donating to my project, you will be ensuring that my students are experiencing as much of the first grade classroom experience as virtually possible!

Many of my students would love to be in the classroom, but their immune systems are compromised, or they are living with family members whose immune systems are compromised. Your donation helps them experience the classroom environment under these extraordinary circumstances.
