This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to school everyday with a great desire to learn and wonderful enthusiasm. I feel they are owed the same opportunity as the students in our district who attend the schools in the more affluent neighborhoods. I do my best every day with what I have but technology is the missing link
I teach at a public school in one of the largest districts in Illinois.
My students are 1st graders with a love for school. They come to school every day smiling and ready to work hard. The problem is our school is in a low-income neighborhood and thus we do not have all the same technological opportunities and this does keep them from learning with all the advantages of the 21st century.
The neighborhood is low-income and thus the PTO is not able to raise the funds necessary to provide the technology the classrooms need. We can not expect the parents to donate to the school if they are struggling to feed their families. Some students are given weekend backpacks filled with food supplies to carry them through the weekend. These same students are then provided with a free breakfast and lunch during the school day.
As a staff, we turn to our families and friends for coats and donated clothing for our students as needed. But my classroom also needs technology.
My Project
An interactive whiteboard would provide a great opportunity for my students to interact with the lessons taught thus increasing their engagement. Students all learn in different ways and this would provide that extra opportunity to meet their educational needs. The lessons become very visual and the students can interact with what is on the whiteboard and save what they have done for later. Anything on the computer can be projected onto the whiteboard so the opportunities for learning are endless.
My students are definitely behind their peers in their exposure to technology.
Many do not have computers and/or internet access at home. In this day and age that puts them light years behind their peers. The textbooks we have are outdated and we only have one computer lab in our building, thus my students can use it 30 minutes/week. We are lucky enough to have 3 computers in our classroom, but adding a whiteboard would really increase their ability to benefit from the use of technology.
