Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As the world become more crowded and consumption increases, humans put increasing pressure on our environment. Climate change and its effects are important topics of conversation. And the solutions to problems humans have unknowingly caused lie with humans themselves. This is the place where science and engineering intersect, and too many young people in the U.S. do not see themselves as scientists or engineers.

My 12th grade environmental science students are creative, committed, and diverse.

They are high-energy and strong-willed. They speak multiple languages. They are involved in their communities and care deeply about their families. They stay after school for help and they want to succeed.

My students are mostly Latino kids who come from a high poverty urban area and attend a small public school that focuses on developing students as citizens and leaders in both English and Spanish. In this century, the United States needs more young people ready to tackle difficult problems through science. Career opportunities abound if we can peak student interest and make science accessible.

My Project

Maybe it's old school, but the classic composition notebook has many overlooked features. For example, you can't tear pages out and you know if you missed notes, even when you're absent. My students number their pages on day 1, and as we move through units of study, the whole class keeps the same page numbering system. If a student misses a day, she knows because she has a blank page and can copy the notes from another student, or from the teacher's notebook. When a student suggests, "We never learned that!" His classmate replies, "The definition is on page 78." Everyone has the definition on page 78. Although a binder allows students to insert handouts and worksheets easily, it is hard to keep organized. A notebook is easy. It is one single thing they need to keep, all year.

With a notebook, students must often tape in valuable notes, color diagrams, and graphs.

They need information at their fingertips, and if we are learning a lot of vocabulary, I print notes for students to tape in. If we use complicated diagram, students tape them in. An integral text, taped in. As a result- tape is extremely valuable, and my students often lack this sort of valuable, basic supplies. Additionally, printing documents in color, for students to keep in their notebooks, is of similar value. When we learn by looking at complex maps and graphs with multiple lines of evidence, my students need to have access to their own copies, in their notebooks.

I am asking for your donation to keep my tape and color ink supply going. My school does not provide color printing services to teachers, but my students benefit greatly from analyzing complex scientific information in color.
