This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach kindergarten in a low socio-economic area of Connecticut. Our entire school receives free breakfast and lunch because of the income level of our families overall. Many children have only heard and spoken Spanish at home (often of Puerto Rican descent) and some have only been exposed to Arabic. Our school is K-5 with most grades having 5 classes. My students entered school this year with the majority having little to no exposure to a school environment before kindergarten.
We have a incredibly dedicated staff of teachers and administrators.
Our staff hosts many after hours activities so that school becomes a happy and familiar place for our families.
My Project
This year, I have begun to use a fantastic phonics program in my kindergarten classroom. I love this program as it incorporates all learning modalities for my students.--visual, auditory and also kinesthetic (hands on learning). The program contains a white board showing kid-friendly markings for appropriate letter formation, as well as a magnetic alphabet board and 26+ magnetic letter tiles. I know that little ones learn best when they can use more than one of their senses to access learning.
The problem is that little hands and fingers often lose the little parts of this program, especially the 1 inch letter tiles.
This year I have only had 8 students in person so I was able to utilize the 8 drawer cart that I had in my classroom to organize all the parts of this program.
It would be awesome to be able to continue to use this system as more students return to in-school learning. I need another cart to accommodate all my students.
