This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Yes, you can! These are the words my students will have to believe in order to meet the requirements of the new Common Core Standards.
My students live in the inner-city with many students living below the poverty line.
Most students live in low-income housing in single-parent households. These 5th grade students attend the local public elementary school in the community. Many of them are second generation immigrants. Their parents have come to the US in search of a better life and quality education for their kids. This class is comprised of 30 English Language Learners from diverse backgrounds. Most of the students' first language is Spanish. The majority of them understand the sacrifice parents are making for them and want to excel in school to make their parents proud.
My Project
These resources sound simple, but will have a huge impact on student learning. Most English Language Learners shy away from participating in class because they are not comfortable with their speech. The white boards will help to encourage more participation among the students without the fear of being made fun of. These resources will be useful in both whole and small group instruction in both reading and math. In addition, the boards can serve as a quick assessment tool to determine which students are getting it, and which students need a little more support. Students love using the whiteboards. It motivates them to make attempts at problem solving and to take more risks in the classroom. Being that every student will have a board; the possibilities of how to use them are endless. The headphones will allow six students at a time to use differentiated computer software to help practice and reinforce reading and math skills.
These students have the gift of dual language.
These students will be in demand as our society becomes more interconnected and interdependent. It is extremely important that these students become proficient in English and use the asset of knowing another language to help them become college and career ready in the near future. It is a known fact that students with strong literacy skills do better in school. Students that do well in school tend to have better jobs and better lives.
