Small Group and Center Time Makes All the Difference

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"And when things start to happen don't worry. Don't stew. Just go right along. You'll start happening too." -Dr. Seuss Oh, the Places You'll Go.
The greatest moments I have with students are the moment something clicks. Small group and center time allows the individualized attention to let it click.
My school and class population are highly varied!
I have students who are very high for kindergarten and some that still have trouble holding a pencil to write. I need center time in order to help all these students go to the next level. Last year, I saw how well this worked. This year's class is very different but I have come to love them all and see that no matter where they begin ,I can help them get to the next step. The first quarter of our school year just came to a close. As I reviewed my data, I see the deficiencies many of students are facing. The materials I requested will give me additional tools to help these students with the literacy skills they are lacking.
My Project
Word and letter tiles will help my students learn to identify their letters with more confidence. The high interest books I chose will capture my students attention and they will want to know more. I want to see the light turn on for my students when they start to solve things for themselves and truly understand.
These resources will bring literacy into all aspects of the day. There are books to help with math concepts, books to read in a small group, and resources to have centers. My students rotate through centers each day while I have small groups with me. My center students will learn first sounds, last sounds, independent reading, writing, and literacy skills with me. Phonemic awareness is so crucial to successful readers and writers later in the educational cycle. The many books will help my students learn to read through interesting books. During center time, my students will be able to review and reinforce many concepts already taught throughout the day. There is a center for beginning and ending sounds. These centers will help my students learn to listen to all the sounds in a word to better equip them for reading and writing. I see this time of independent work as teaching them how to learn using their cohorts and their own problem solving skills. During this same time, I will be reteaching skills at my small group table using many of the book sets I requested.
This project will help my class not only learn, but learn with high quality research based products.
These center items are much better than anything I can create and certainly cannot purchase myself. The books will create a much greater variety in the literature experience. The non-fiction selections teach the students that reading is fun and can teach us about the world around us. The group sets of books allow for cohort groups read and learn together and from each other.
