My students need 20 fetal pigs, seven dissecting trays and dissection kits, dissection pins, vinyl gloves, a dissection guide and review sheets.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Marson's classroom raised $581
This project is fully funded
Can you imagine inspiring students, through one classroom experience, to become a surgeon or medical doctor? That is my goal though the dissection unit that I am planning for my students. I work in a high-needs community where resources for students are often limited. However, the wonderful groups of eighth grade students that I work with have great dreams and aspirations for their life. It is my desire to expose them to educational experiences that will instill in them a lifelong passion for learning.
The eighth grade students will soon begin a unit on the various body systems. While it is fascinating to learn about the body systems through colorful diagrams in a book, I think that it would be more meaningful to the students if they were to hold actual organs in their hands. This seems impossible, but through fetal pig dissections, this is exactly what my students would be able to do! I teach science lab to fourth through eighth grade students, and this group of eighth graders have been asking me if they could dissect since they were in seventh grade.
If my students are able to dissect fetal pigs this year, I believe that it would be an educational experience they would never forget—I still remember the first time I dissected a worm when I was in seventh grade! So I know my students would never forget this experience. Through the dissection experience, my students would be able to see first-hand the intricacies of the body systems and how they all work together. They will be able to examine and describe the various organs and organ systems. I believe that it will raise many questions for them, which is a good thing, because they will then be able to complete independent research projects to find the answers to their questions. All we need to begin are some fetal pigs and dissection kits and trays!
With your support, you can make this experience possible for my students! My students will be full of excitement if I am able to say to them, “Guess what guys? Through a very generous donation, we are finally going to be able to take part in a dissection project!”
