My students need programmable drones and building blocks to find creative and innovative ways to solve real-world problems.

My Students
My school is comprised of a variety of students. Some of these students are described as limited English students, delinquent, migratory students, or students with disabilities. The total enrollment is approximately 776 students. The ethnic composition is comprised of approximately 62% Black, 11% White, 20% Hispanic, .2% American Indian, 3% Asian, and 3% two or more races. In my school, 64.5% of the students are eligible for free or reduced meals.
Students at my school love to learn, and can acquire so much more knowledge if only we had the resources.
My goal for my students is making sure they are learning in an environment that is challenging, innovative, and engaging. Acquiring the educational materials needed to achieve my goal will set a path for students' success beyond the classroom.
My Project
As a K-5 STEM lab teacher, over 750 students rotate through my lab each week. I hold myself accountable by making sure that my students receive the best STEM education that I can give them by constantly researching innovative and creative ways my students can make a positive impact on society. The recent and past devastations of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Katrina, respectively, have inspired me to implement a STEM lesson on using drones for animal rescue efforts. During natural disasters, pet owners find it very difficult to leave their domestic pets behind and are reluctant to be rescued without their pets. Therefore, for this STEM challenge, students will work in groups to become a drone-specialized rescue team who will devise a plan that will simulate a rescue for hard to reach household pets from a natural disaster such as a hurricane.
Drones foster creative uses of existing techniques.
One of the features of the drone is a grabber with the ability to pick up and drop items. Another special feature of the drone is its coding capabilities. Students will use building blocks to create mini animals, then program the drone to maneuver through an obstacle to perform the simulated animal rescue. This STEM challenge will allow students to see the benefits of aerial drones in our current world. Most importantly, coding improves students' logical, mathematical, and computational thinking, which leads to the development of their problem-solving skills and strengthens their creativity.
