My Project
This project will crossover the study students do about body systems in science class with the history they learn about early humans in their history class. Making cross-curricular connections deepens their understanding of both topics.
Students will use these skulls to compare anatomy with features on skulls of Neanderthals, Australopithecus and other great apes.
They will use calipers to compare skulls in terms of the size and shape of teeth, eye sockets, nose and brain case. We will even compare the location of the spinal cord to make the case for bipedalism. This is a practice in observation, finding evidence and drawing conclusions from our findings.
As students study the history of the earliest humans, it helps to have modern models to see what similarities we share and how different we are from the other great apes!
